Workshop Winners: Waterside Art Group

With Artist Ashley Hanson

In August, professional artist Ashley Hanson once again generously volunteered his time to run a full day’s workshop with our latest art club winners, Waterside Art Group.

The Group are based in Hythe, not far from the New Forest National Park, and is a diverse gathering of local artists. They meet on Tuesday evenings for social painting and drawing sessions and also organise a programme of demonstrations, occasional workshops and an annual exhibition of group works.

The group were a wonderful crowd to work with and approached Ashley’s exercises with lots of enthusiasm, embracing the concepts that helped push them out of their comfort zones. Many of the members said it had given them new ideas and ways to approach their  painting, and helped them think about colour more without being too focused on making a copy of what they see.

“The painting group have all agreed that Ashley’s workshop was so excitingly different, with everything skilfully explained and desmonstrated so that everyone could visualize how to achieve a painting and in fact did just that. Ashley was brilliantly informative on colour and abstraction and I hope he’ll be pleased to hear that some members are determined to keep going in the abstraction direction.” – Shelia Reeves.

It was a day of colour and bold gestures that produced some excellent paintings, revealing that a number of members had a natural talent for abstraction! If you’d like to learn more about Waterside Art Group or are interested in joining them please visit their website for more details
