The Artists Journal

A great friend of the artist, the journal is a gold mine that can be flipped through with your fingers.

One discovers thoughts, writings and draft ideas in a totally inspiring creative mix. With no expectation of results and no judgement, the journal remains a very uncomplicated medium of expression. It is the perfect tool to archive emotions, artistic whims or to take simple notes.

I use it as a varied assortment of small graphic or handwritten notes or drawings serving to wet my appetite as a painter with a view to create a future artwork on canvas.

Why use a Journal?

The purpose of Journal is not to present only raw and unstructured information, but to capture texts and drawings before they fade away in an avalanche of thoughts. The idea is to quickly write down an idea, a drawing, to keep a written trace in a safe place, to unload the brain, and to have access to all this precious information again.

At once a diary, a collection of resources, or a literary and plastic genre, the journal is a real and imaginary space, a memory materialised by a free assembly of words, images, emotions, creations (sketches, photographs, collages), and above all a sharing of dreams and experiences. Mr. Da Vinci was a great lover of journals! He filled some of them…

Finally, the journal is more than a simple collection of old scribbled papers, it is an initiatory journey that pushes the artist towards observation, thoughts on himself and on the world.

From Plein Air to Art Studio

The use of the journal is synonymous with travel, speed, exploration, visions but also relief. After using it, you feel good! And that’s why we enjoy leafing through it again and again.

There is nothing better than the paper medium combined with a pencil, pen or paintbrush to free your creativity and your mind without effort.

The Fabriano Artist’s Journal

I appreciate the use of a Fabriano Journal with its recognisable cover in dark blue paper, and its sheets of laid Ingres paper, made on a round and acid-free form. Inside, the sheets have the particularity of being proposed in 2 different colours: vanilla white and ivory or beige.

DID YOU KNOW?

The pages of Fabriano Journal are sewn and bound in small bundles of the same colour sheets. In this article, the size of my journal is 5×6 inch. There are other sizes available in the shop.
