How do you Transfer an Image onto Paper?

You’re not really comfortable with drawing, but you want to quickly reproduce an image effortlessly.

How do you transfer a picture onto a drawing or painting surface? Would you like a simple technique for achieving this?

6 Tips to Remember

There are several ways to copy an image in a few strokes. Personally, I know of 6 different ways.

Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, but you can transfer the ghost image of a pattern or a subject using:

  1. a sheet of tracing paper for paper, cardboard or a wooden board
  2. a sheet of carbon paper for drawing on paper or fine or medium fabric such as linen and cotton
  3. the grid technique for tracing on primed canvas or paper
  4. a light box for tracing on a sheet of paper that is not too thick
  5. a window pane with backlighting to trace on a sheet of thin paper
  6. charcoal sticks, carrés chalk pastels, or dry pastels to draw on paper or cardboard

These products are currently available at GreatArt Online or in the art supply shop in London Shoreditch..

My favourite technique for transferring

Powdered pigments such as charcoal sticks, carrés chalk, or dry pastels can be used to transfer without much material. This technique is inspired by the carbon paper.

You will need:

  • 1 printed picture on a sheet of paper
  • 1 charcoal stick, or dry pastel
  • 1 HB graphite pencil
  • 1 drawing pad or notebook

The Method:

– Take a printed sheet of paper with a picture to copy.

– Turn the sheet over, rub its back directly with a charcoal stick and cover the surface with pigment.

– Put the charcoal pigment-coated sheet on the pad of paper. Make sure that the blackened side is in direct contact with one of the sheets of the sketchbook.

– Using a pen or stylus, trace the outline of the pattern or image to be reproduced.

– Lift the printed sheet of paper. The charcoal pigment will now appear on the sheet of paper on your drawing pad.

– To transfer precisely, you may have to redefine the line with an HB graphite pencil to make the drawing more visible.
