Hahnemühle® Bamboo Paper
In the art world, research is progressing because the production of paper, synthetic colours, solvents and brushes is constantly increasing in quantity and harmful waste. We think about it too little.
Did you know that paper production is energy-consuming and polluting?
To make paper, the industry devastates entire forests, while many trees take years to grow.
Tree-Free Papermaking Exists!
Did you know that this exists? Paper can be made from cereal straws, reeds, sugar cane and bamboo also have interesting properties. Our current technologies allow us to create better and better products for the planet! It would be a shame not to take advantage of this.
Today, I’m sharing with you my favourite product of the day: German paper made from bamboo “Hergestellt aus Bambus” by the brand Hahnemühle.
Hahnemühle Paper | Bamboo Fibre
For many years, Hahnemühle has been working continuously on new processes to make paper production more ecological, future-proof and environmentally friendly.
In 2008, Hahnemühle (which means “Rooster Mill” in German) started to use faster-growing, sustainable raw materials and introduced bamboo paper. A multi-technical paper made from 90% bamboo fibres and 10% cotton. Hahnemühle has expanded its “Natural Line” range over the years, with bamboo papers and notebooks suitable for mixed media.
This natural paper, full of character and made of bamboo fibres, is suitable for many artistic techniques: drawing, charcoal, red chalk, pastel, watercolour, ink, printmaking, gouache and acrylic. Superb results are achieved with washes, glazes and wet-on-wet techniques.
The sheets offer a unique surface and a surprisingly soft feel for a paper made from natural bamboo fibres. The very warm white of the paper provides beautiful contrasts and gives intensity to the colours, which do not fuse and retain their brightness perfectly.
GREAT TO KNOW: Hahnemühle Bamboo paper is completely vegan and acid-free. These products are currently available at GreatArt Online or in the art supply shop in London Shoreditch..
Bamboo Paper | My User Review
Since I started as a professional artist in 2008, I like to try different types of paper to unleash my creativity. Bamboo is one of my favourite media.
In this article I talk about Bamboo Mixed Media paper.
- Versatile and reliable paper
- 30 sheets A4 pad (265gsm)
- Soft grain, neither too coarse nor too fine
- Good thickness and pleasant structure
- A very good price/quality ratio
- Sheets are glued on 3 sides
Personally, I like ultra-white papers, but I quite like its vanilla white too.
The paper curls a bit but doesn’t show any puddles of colour and that’s quite positive. You shouldn’t get this paper too wet if you want it to stay nice. Indeed, it is not suitable for a soaked technique, which is normal under 300gr. It is soft and remains fragile on the surface. Be careful with the application of the masking fluid, which can stick in places.
- Gouache and acrylic paints behave very well.
- Markers and coloured pencils are very popular.
GREAT TO KNOW : The paper is slightly difficult to remove from the block. I use a thin metal or plastic ruler to detach them more easily. Using the hand or fingers increases the risk of ruining the paper.
