Society of Women Artists
Founded in 1855, the society has had a unique history dedicated to promoting art by women. The Annual Exhibition at the prestigious Mall Galleries, London showcases a stunning and eclectic mix of artwork in all media. The Society encourages variety and versatility and features some of the finest contemporary women artists from all over the world, thus sustaining a reputation for excellence
The society celebrated its 150th year of exhibitions in 2011 with a special annual exhibition featuring a retrospective display of important works. Her Royal Highness Princess Michael of Kent, the Society’s patron, once again opened the private view and presented prizes to the winning artists. Among these prizes was ‘The GreatArt Award’, which was awarded to Annabel Fairfax for her outstanding body of work. Once again the exhibition was a great success and the private view was bustling with people admiring the impressive variety of artwork.
The future as well as the past has always played an important part is the lives of the SWA artists and after celebrating 150 years of Exhibitions they look forward to embracing with renewed vigour the 21st century and all that it may offer. They have an eclectic mix of artists, who are unafraid of experimentation whilst producing work that is both substantial and exciting.
The SWA actively encourages young artists from all the leading Art Colleges and Schools and offers special rates for their submissions together with generous Young Artist Awards. They also endeavour to support the under privileged and vulnerable members of society through special gala evenings during their Exhibition and have been able to make regular donations to many worthy causes.
