Daniel Smith Watercolour

The reference for artists’ watercolour!

These superb watercolours are made in Seattle, and offer artists the largest selection of shades in the world with 247 colours!

The Daniel Smith range includes 207 colours which use only a single pigment, irridescent colours, and their specialist range of Primatek shades; where nature meets art. The brand also sources their pigments from countries all over the world including Brazil, Africa and Australia to ensure their paints have an incomparible intensity.

Daniel Smith Watercolour
Daniel Smith is dedicated to their diverse range of colours and offering artists the best choices when selecting their palette. With this dedication comes truly specialist and rare colours. In the 1990’s the brand was the first to introduce a full line of quinacridone colours which are high performance in terms of transparency, lightfastness and clarity. They are also ideal for watercolourists because they combine the power of staining pigments with the luminosity of transparent ones. This results in excellent washes with great depth of colour.

The iridescent colours

The iridescent colours Daniel Smith offers reflect light directly, like a mirror, which results in intense colour and sheen. They also offer shades described as interference, which refract and scatter light to create different hues depending on where the light strikes, duochromes which alter between two different colours and pearlescent with an opal like effect. They are all part of a group known as Luminescent Colour.

Primatek

The Daniel Smith Primatek paints are truly special in that they are literally made from the ground up and bring nature into art. The line began with Lapis Lazuli, the blue gemstone you will see in King Tut’s mask. It was found and formulated into artist quality paint. The colour received such a great response that a mineralogist was hired to travel the world in search of other exciting natural pigments. This meant travelling to remote locations by plane, jeep and negotiating with local miners. Each of the large minerals are processed to reveal the colours within which are then blended with medium and ground to bring out the natural beauty of the shade.

The Primatek range includes 30 colours that retain many of the natural qualities of their source materials. They bring to the artist’s palette natural beauty and texture as well a unique history of pigments, literally millions of years old.
