The Daniel Smith Experience with GreatArt

First steps with Daniel Smith

New for 2014, Daniel Smith Watercolours were a long awaited and very welcome addition to the GreatArt range. Our team were given the chance to try them first hand and find out what makes these colours so special.

The Daniel Smith Experience with GreatArt
The Daniel Smith Watercolours contain only pigment and gum arabic. This pure and concentrated recipe means that they are able to produce ‘Dot Cards’ which hold small samples of colour on heavy weight watercolour paper that you can wet to have a chance to try the shades before you select tubes to purchase. Just by using the dot cards, the GreatArt team were able to try blending the shades and the see the unique qualities of the special shades Daniel Smith offer.

Primatek range

It was particularly interesting to see the effects of the Primatek range, which are sourced from natural stones and sources all over the world and hold qualities such as natural granulation, seen in the testing of ‘Green Apatite Genuine’. We were also privilaged to try the ‘Quinacridone Gold’ which is a worldwide bestseller.

The watercolour sticks

The watercolour sticks were particular popular for their value and versatility. Use them like a watercolour with a brush, they are the equivalent of 3 whole pans, try sketching details with them or using them directly on the paper and blending with a brush.

Daniel Smith also produce auxillary products including a masking fluid and 3 colours of watercolour ground to prepare non absorbent surfaces for painting. Once dry the masking fluid comes off cleanly without tearing or damaging the paper surface which is very useful for cloud and sky effects or protecting small details and fine lines.

The Grounds also hold a multitude of possibilities in that you can apply them to non absorbent surfaces such as glass, plastic and metal to produce a NOT surface suitable for watercolours and acrylics. This offers possibilities not only for fine art painting but also decorative art as it can allow you to decorate homeware items.

You can also tint it for a coloured surface, or use it to correct mistakes in your watercolour painting. Apply a thin layer to the completely dry area of your work, leave for 24 hours and then paint again on the newly ready surface.
