Conte Carres Pastels

Conte Carres Pastels

The perfect drawing tool…

Famous creator of Conte carres pastels and art pencils, Nicolas-Jacques Conte (born in Sées, Normandy in 1755) was passionate about painting, and by the time he is 20 had moved to Paris to study where he produced among other things, portraits of the royal family members.

In 1789, the French Revolution forced him to change his profession which is when he became a talented inventor and began research on pencils and pastels.

In 1794 he developed a modern graphite lead when the shipment of English graphite stopped due to the war with France. He created it using a combination of graphite and clay which made it possible to produce different degrees of hardness for pencils. He also developed ‘Pencils without sleeves’ which were bare leads, and worked on making colours unchangeable to satisfy the needs of artists looking for more permanent dry media. This lead to the beginning of artists’ pencils and pastels.

Conte carres pastels
The sketching Carres range is composed of several shades: sanguine, grey, yellowish brown, and 3 degrees of black and white. These carrés are very soft in their application, and are made of natural pigments (iron oxide, carbon black, and titanium dioxide), clay (kaolin), and a binder (cellulosic ether). They are then cooked by extrusion and dried just like pastels. The cooking degree allows variations in the hardness degree. Their high pigmentation rate allows for a great intensity of colour to satisfy all artists and techniques.
