Blockx Oil Paint

Known and recognised all over the world…

Founded in 1845, this artists’ colours manufacturer is known and recognized by artists all over the world for the quality of its oil paints, worked on by 5 generations of chemists who dedicated their lives to the art of painting.

The story began in 1860 during the industrial revolution. Great workshops have disappeared and artists no longer prepare their own colours. They buy them from the new manufacturers but complain that despite the convenience they cannot provide the same traditional quality of paint.
Jacques Blockx I, a passionate chemist, started looking for the secret of the “good traditional colours” for his artist friends.

Jacques was fascinated by the fabrication of the pigments and motivated by the search for the finest quality. In his book called “Compendium” he wrote that “we reject every colour that does not have the required qualities to give the artist a perfectly stable paint”. Indeed, the range of colours created has never contained fleeting or weak shades.

So sure of his product, at the beginning of the 20th century it was written on the order forms “I only prepare colours when I know that they are stable. Blockx products are guaranteed chemically pure. The liquids have a registered trademark. NO COMPLAINT ON THE QUALITY WILL BE ACCEPTED.”

Why is Blockx so different?

Every pigment is carefully chosen and used pure, for the highest saturation possible. No filler material of any kind is added. The colours can easily be mixed, even directly on the support, and reveal all their brightness making your artworks purer and more intense.

The ochre, earth, and black pigments are grinded with high-quality linseed oil, but Blockx is not afraid to use poppy oil to avoid yellowing or cracks after drying. A slow grinding on a porphyry stone avoids the heating of the material and guarantees thinness, smoothness and purity of the colour. The oil colour is fluid, flowing and easy to use like a hot knife through butter.

Each manufactured product has one quality: Being the Best. Blockx does not classify its products by solidity level because he only uses highly solid pigments. They do not do an “intermediate” range.

The artist can work with confidence that no matter which Blockx colour he will use it will always have an excellent lightfastness.
