Sarah Hollebon presents
Woven Experiences
GreatArt, 5th – 30th July

A showcase of key works from collections Mental Health and new pieces from Life After Trauma.

I believe opening up the conversation on what can be challenging and uncomfortable topics and stigmatising views is vital for creating positive and long-lasting impact. Change starts with meaningful conversations and my garments serve as a platform to begin this.

Throughout my life, I have experienced my own mental health struggles. I also witnessed family members subjected to shame and stigma due to their mental ill health and disabilities. The emotions I felt from this made me determined to challenge the stigma in each collection that I design and create, as well as through public speaking, activism, and my work with Mind in Kingston, Time to Change Kingston, and Speakers Collective.

The interviews I conduct with people who have a lived experience, along with extensive research and working with mental health professionals, helps me gain a deeper understanding on the topic. Interviewees are then involved throughout the design process. Their input helps to create an accurate and sensitive design whilst encouraging personal confidence to grow. Receiving their feedback during this process has been a cathartic experience for both of us.

Collaborations are an important part of my work as this helps create positive and meaningful social impact. The exhibition Woven Experiences has been curated by Katie-Marie Ford, an independent art curator, writer, and holistic coach.

Throughout the exhibition, there is art featured by self-taught hand illustrator Connor Lawson, hand embroiderer Beth Cole who has worked for various fashion houses including Alexander McQueen and Ralph and Russo, textile artist Rebecca Bruton, and London College of Fashion graduate footwear designer Cecília Glória, who are working closely with myself to help continue important conversations on social topics.
