La Petite Aquarelle by Sennelier

For those who follow my blog posts as an artist since 2009, you may already know that I greatly appreciate Sennelier paints. And as you can imagine, I’m going to add a little more appreciation with this review.

My Student Memories

Let’s take a big leap back in time together.

I discovered the French brand SENNELIER in art school in my art studies.

The Sennelier range have always made me melt (OK a bit for their price) but above all for their vivid colours. I did not have many hits with my work at the time but these tools were very precious to me and when colour and quality appeal to you, you begin to take a liking to it, and habits set in.

We then find ourselves carried away by a creative spiral that pushes you to test the other ranges offered by the brand. This is how I took my first steps in watercolour.

In the 90s, the time when I was busy with my very first paintings, Sennelier range was not as extensive as in 2022. I would have liked to come across “La Petite Aquarelle” (the tiny Watercolour), it would have helped me out with my artworks.

SENNELIER: La Petite Aquarelle (12 colours)

  • Made in France
  • Good value for money
  • Student set, fine paint
  • Sennelier colours are pleasant to work with. They are reputed to be richly pigmented, intense and luminous and above all they react pleasantly to water;
  • The box is quite elegant and solid. It is very small but not uncomfortable to use. The plastic is of good quality. The colours do not bead on the material, as is often the case with other plastic or metal palettes;
  • the box remains airtight even when closed;
  • Use at home or on the go, the palette fits easily into a bag when on the go;
  • The empty space in the middle of the box can be replaced by additional half pans;
  • When drying, the paint smooths out and can lighten a little for some colours;
  • The addition of the elastic strap is very clever and facilitates effortless maintenance of the blade in the palm of the hand;
  • The small brush included remains practical and the precision of its tip is suitable for some time.

Improvement for Sennelier R&D:

“Psst guys, the brown and ultramarine blue colours in the palette lack pigmentation compared to the other shades. Damn it, blue is one of my favorite colours! I’m sure you’ll quickly resolve this inconvenience.”

SENNELIER: My choice of Paper

To make the colours of my little watercolour sing, I used a Sennelier watercolour paper block of several sheets, block glued on 4 sides (300 gsm, 100% cotton, acid-free), paper available in several grains.

SENNELIER: In my Studio

To illustrate my user review, I’ve added some of my achievements painted in Sennelier colours.

In this post, I used MOLOTOW fine point black markers (the line does not smudge, even when brushing watercolours on the location of the black marker). I added some washi tape to my paintings because I love the effect it gives!
