Courses in Cornwall and Kent with Ashley Hanson
His paintings of Cornish harbor towns, with ‘their exquisite mix of the natural and man-made landscape’ and his journeys around the USA, have been widely shown in galleries in the UK.

Ashley’s work has been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Discerning Eye and the National Open Art Competition and he has been a recipient of a Boise Travel scholarship from the Slade and won second prize in the Hunting Art Prizes.
Ashley is also an experienced teacher and runs several very popular courses each year in Cornwall and Kent under the banner ‘Freedom in Painting’.
In 2017, there are a mixture of four, five and six day courses, in three different inspiring coastal locations in Cornwall – Porthleven, Polruan/Fowey and Port Isaac, all featuring a mixture of working on location and in the studio. In addition, there are two shorter ‘Freedom in Painting’ courses in Faversham, Kent in March and October.

‘As artists, we never stop learning. We must challenge ourselves, surprise ourselves, look for something new in our work. It’s what you do with the subject that matters. Art is about ideas as well as painting skills and techniques. On all the ‘Freedom in Painting’ courses, the artists are encouraged to find their own personal interpretations of the landscape or the theme of the course’

This is my third year in Porthleven – I don’t know of other courses where the tutor is as committed as Ashley. His ability to communicate his knowledge and ideas is a great skill.
