Create your own Colour Bar
Juice bar, wine bar, tapas bar, so why not a Colour Bar?!
I’d had this idea for a long time. And then, one day, I made it. I gathered all the items I needed. For the most part I found them in my studio. Some recycling, some ideas, and some work, let me explain how I made this concept. A topic to inspire you!
What is a Bar?
Originally, it was a drinking shop where the consumer stands, or sits on high stools, at a counter. Bar also refers to a cabinet/cupboard containing items for preparing cocktails or refreshments. The main feature of a bar is having everything immediately accessible in a very functional way that makes you want to try and enjoy.
The colour bar is a little cousin of the Juice Bar. Here is the new definition for the “Colour Bar”: studio furniture with a choice of colours (paint, ink, pencil, pastel) immediately available to the artist.
It all started with a small wooden cabinet (here painted white) found in a famous Swedish store specializing in the sale of furniture. This concept can also be applied to a column of shelves or other small furniture.
7 Smart Storage Ideas
IDEA 1: Colours in a single glance
Storage to help you see clearer.
Material:
- Paint tubes with caps
- Acrylic paint applied with a brush or finger
IDEA 2: Colour Tray #1
This tip vertically stabilizes the tubes, pencils and pens in a long shallow box.
Material:
- Cardboard box
- Cutter + cardboard tubes (shortened to desired height)
IDEA 3: Colours Tray #2
Another tip that allows you to stabilize small tubes and other stuff.
Material:
- shallow cardboard box + cardboard sheets
- 1 Cutter + 1 ruler + 1 pencil (cutting inserts according to desired width and height)
IDEA 4: Shelving Chart
This storage idea takes longer to set up, but the best advantage is a colourful shelf which includes a nice colour range. The tubes are arranged horizontally in small boxes stacked on each other.
Material:
- 1 Cutter + 1 ruler + 1 pencil
- 1 Roll of Adhesive Tape
- cardboard sheets (thickness groove 1)
NOTICE: The making of the box is easily understood through the pictures. It is a folded cardboard sheet having two open ends at the front and at the back.
- Height of the box: about 3 to 3.5 cm or the diameter of the cap.
- Depth: length of the longest tube in stock.
Leave space around the cap to easily access with fingers.
IDEA 5: “Hang-All” Storage Panel
Suspend some tubes from a wooden frame with the “Hang-All” storage panel.
Material:
- 1 Wooden Frame
- Support Bars (eventually)
- Nails or Tacks
- White Spray Paint
- Mini Binder Clips
NOTICE: The making of the “Hang-All” panel is quite easy to understand. Bars can be added. They are fixed by attaching a screw inserted from the edge of the frame. I will explain this in a future article.
IDEA 6: Fixing the Panel
The “Hang-All” panel is then attached to a cabinet shelf. This simple way has the advantage to attach and remove as needed.
Material:
- 1 “Hang-All” panel
- Open screw (2 or +)
- 1 Hammer + Folding Eyelet Hanger (2 or +)
- 1 shelf
NOTICE: The number of Folding Eyelet Hangers depend on the total weight of the “Hang-All” panel. With my Colour Bar, the panel is suspended from two hooks fixed on the edge of a shelf.
IDEA 7: Storage Stock
In a studio, there are two types of art materials: the main and secondary. Better to put the main at the front, and put the secondary away, to avoid unnecessarily cluttering the view. The secondary products are all found just behind the “Hang-All” panel!
Since creating it for my studio, the colour bar has increased my desire to paint. With a simple look, I wanted to get more colours…
I love my new brand colour bar because it’s a useful tool, aesthetic furniture and it triggers so much my creativity!
