RHUL Art Society

For those seeking art at Royal Holloway University…

The RHUL Art Society was formed just a year ago by committee members Fiona Baird, Christine Plastow and Rachel Dakin, who were all students studying at the university. The group shared a love of art and found that since studying at Royal Holloway they really missed their art classes from school and college, so decided to form a group where they could express their creativity and encourage others to come along and do the same.
RHUL Art Society
Since the group was formed they have gained their forth committee member Emily Copley and have worked hard together to arrange life drawing sessions, gallery trips, discussions and lectures that are open to all who wish to attend including those outside of the University. Their dedication is admirable, particularly as the society receives no funding from the Student Union until they have been in place for 12 months. Quite often the committee members have provided materials themselves to use during workshops and drawing sessions so they are extremely pleased to have received £350 worth of vouchers from GreatArt to purchase some much needed art materials!
The society aims to provide insights into a range of styles to help members try something new; when GreatArt visited they were discussing cubism and Picasso and applying the fundamentals to their own work with the help of some modelling from the committee. They have also in the past organised a lecture on surrealism and Salvador Dali, and introductions to a range of artists and styles. Whilst informative, the sessions do stretch outside of the classroom and really provide a place for people to have open discussions about art and enjoy practical sessions without the pressures you would find in a course. Their facebook page also offers a forum where people can discuss exhibitions they have visited, post comments, and find out about the latest trips and meetings organised for the group.

Their attendance can range up to 40 people per meeting and absolutely everyone is welcome to attend. Regular membership is available or occasional visitors can pay a £1 per session.
Visit their facebook page to find out about their upcoming events.
