Poole & East Dorset Art Society

The oldest art society in Poole…

This dynamic and enterprising group was originally formed in 1924 and is the oldest art society in Poole. Holding two major exhibitions every year, as well as taking part in the Biennial Dorset Art Weeks event, Poole and East Dorset Art Society has a membership of over 100 artists practising in a variety of art forms, and demonstrate skills in painting, drawing, sculpture and textiles. The societies program is extremely varied and flexible as it responds to members wishes and interests. It includes demonstrations and lectures as well as workshops, critiques, outings and once a year, a long weekend painting on the European continent. They also work alongside other organisations to promote art in their area.

In previous years they have worked with the National Trust to host land art events on Brownsea Island, involving members of the public in activities, and they also run The Peacock Art Gallery in partnership with the Borough of Poole. The gallery is a popular exhibiting space, located above the Tea Rooms at Upton Country Park and is used regularly by Poole & East Dorset Art Society, as well as other groups and organisations and is the location for the Peacock Open Exhibition, which they organise every two years for all the creatives in the local area. The location of the gallery also means that the society regularly use the grounds of Upton Country Park for outdoor painting inspiration during the summer months, as well as travelling to other areas of natural beauty in the Dorset area.

As well as their broad and full programme, art projects are also organised to challenge members. They have recently produced art work for waiting areas at Poole Hospital Trust and have produced sculpture for an exhibition at The Study Gallery in Poole. They have also donated a permanent exhibition to the Radiotherapy department at Poole Hospital.
There is currently a waiting list for membership; however interested artists are still welcome to attend meetings. For more information please visit www.pedas.org.uk
