Kidderminster Art Society

The Kidderminster Art Society began in 1930 and was originally formed by carpet makers and designers from the area who wanted to bring together like minded creative people. Among these early members was the society’s first president Aubrey Phillips and past president John Mellor who passed away only last year at the age of 101, a lifelong member.
The Society’s current president, Shirley Bonas, and chairman, Jim McIntyre, are both members of the Birmingham Watercolour Society and other members also contribute to projects and societies outside of the area such as the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, The Pastel Society, and The Society of Wildlife Artists to name a few.

Due to many changes in officers and the societies long history, not a lot is remembered or recorded of the early years but it is evident that the Society has gone from strength to strength, surviving the war years and continuing to flourish, encompassing members at all levels. They have always been well supported by local historian Michael Dwight who is the curator of the old Kidderminster Art Gallery and he has traditionally hosted their Annual Exhibition every November, until this year when it will be held at the Kidderminster Library Gallery.

Members meet every Thursday, currently at Trimpley Village Hall, for art practise, demonstrations, lectures and appraisals. GreatArt were very happy to present them with their prize voucher and were able to visit Kidderminster Art Society committee and Art Club Prize Draw entrant Gill Parker during Print Night, where members were able to try their hand at lino printing and produce their own cards. This was clearly enjoyed by members of all levels and allowed complete beginners to try something new and produce some effective designs. It was wonderful to see how much they enjoyed each other’s company with plenty of friendly support and advice from those who had tried the technique before.
