Winsor & Newton

Winsor & Newton, past, present and future…

This world-famous colour brand began in England in 1832, when William Winsor, a chemistry specialist, met Henry Newton, an artist.

With this alliance between art and science, the two founders created a colour industry to meet the needs of artists. They aimed to offer them the largest choice of shades with the best resistance. This combination between scientific rigour and the artistic spirit allowed Winsor & Newton to define new standards of permanence and colour.

1832 – 1850: development of new products

The goal of Winsor & Newton was to offer the largest choice of pigments with the best possible resistance. With pragmatism, they were able to launch numerous pigments and new colour ranges within a few decades.

1851 – 1900: increase of export sales

Winsor & Newton’s abroad sales were stimulated by the high quality of their products. Royal nominations’ prestige and the awards they won in international exhibitions also help them growing abroad. During the second half of the 19th century, the competition was weak outside of Europe. Exports to the United States, India and Australia increased.

1901 – 1950: diversification

Until the beginning of the 20th century, Winsor & Newton focused entirely on drawing and painting materials. The company later launched into more hand-craft products, beginning with calligraphy in 1911. They continued the production of artists’ and draughtsmen’ equipment during WWII, despite the shortage of raw materials’.

1951 – Present: creation of 200 new colours

In spite of the post-war years’ economic austerity, the 70s social changes and the 80s crisis, Winsor & Newton maintained a solid manufacture basis. They remained able to develop two new types of completely different colours.
From the 90s, the large number of organic pigments available on the market prompted Winsor & Newton to hold a survey among artists. They were indeed willing to see if artists would appreciate entirely new, brighter and more resistant colours. Around 200 new colours were created between 1990 and 2005 and this creation process is still continuing. 175 years of innovation and development keep animating Winsor & Newton, as well as their constant commitment to meeting their artists’ professional needs.
