St Cuthberts Mill

Located in the southwest of England, close to Wookey Hole and other sites of special scientific interest, the historic St Cuthberts paper mill has been making paper since the early 18th century using the pure waters of the River Axe.

The mill is on the edge of the ancient Cathedral City of Wells and was named after the parish of the local church at the end of the 19th Century. The cross you will find on all of their artists papers is inspired by the medieval cross found on St Cuthbert’s tomb in Durham Cathedral.
St Cuthberts Mill
They are experts in manufacturing high quality artists papers and their products are loved by many. Their master papermakers carefully make beautiful mould made sheets using one of the few remaining cylinder mould machines left in the world. The benefit of making paper in this way offers a stunning texture from the use of natural woollen felts and wonderful stability from the arrangement of the paper fibres.
They use natural ingredients wherever possible and high quality pulps and cotton linters with no added acids. Each paper is thoroughly tested for quality and made to the highest archival standards.

Whilst ensuring the best quality, St Cuthberts Mill also do their best to consider the environment in their paper manufacturer. The water used is taken from the River Axe which is naturally very clean, and is returned to the river once all solids and paper making additives have been removed. The water around the mill carries the highest level of classification for cleanliness and biodiversity, which is endorsed by the trout that live in it!
All pulp is oxygen bleached and Elemental Chlorine Free. They also reuse or recycle as much as possible and all wood used comes from sustainable sources with no harm done to our rainforests.
Try their outstanding quality for yourself. GreatArt currently stocks the Saunders Waterford and Bockingford Watercolour paper ranges from St Cuthberts Mill.
