Liquitex came from Permanent Pigments, based in Cincinnatti (USA). Owned by Henry Levison, it started in 1933 as a manufacturer of oil paints. At the time, they were the first company to test the lightfastness of their paint. They were also first to provide the identification of the pigments on the individual product labels.
Acrylic polymer resin
Permanent Pigments formulated a new artists colour using an acrylic polymer resin emulsified with water. This results in a new paint that could go from a thick to a thin consistency. It could also adhere to any surface and would still dry quickly. It would also be easy to clean. Adapted from “liquid texture” the new product was called Liquitex.
Convincing artists to use acrylic
The acrylic did not win over the artist community straight away, so Henry Levison worked on his communication. The quality of information was just as important as the quality of the materials. He then initiated a large program of exhibitions, workshops and conferences on acrylics. They were all lead by professional artists. As a result, acrylic paint had earned its place in the world of fine arts, having been accepted by art courses and universities across the country.
Famous artists such as Warhol and Hockney started using acrylic. In the 80’s, acrylic also became the most popular painting medium over oil and watercolour.
Liquitex, a very distinctive acrylic.
The Liquitex acrylics offer a smooth consistency. They distinguish themselves by their versatility and flexibility. Therefore, when they dry and age, acrylics stay more flexible than oil, which reduces the risk of cracks. Moreover, the chemistry allows numerous adaptations and modifications of the acrylics’ properties. Today, Liquitex offers the largest array of vibrant acrylic paints, mediums and tools!
